Description
A drillship is a specialized marine vessel with drilling equipment installed on its deck. Drilling is conducted through a moon pool — an opening in the center of the hull — while the vessel maintains its position using a dynamic positioning system. Drillships are best suited for exploring and drilling new wells in ultra-deep waters.
Their mobility allows them to operate across global offshore basins, making them a key tool for deep-water exploration. Drillships can operate in water depths exceeding 10,000 feet (about 3,000 meters) and are capable of drilling extremely deep wells. They are the most versatile of all floating drilling units but also the most expensive to operate.
- Self-propelled vessel with drilling derrick over the moon pool
- Dynamic positioning system maintains station in ultra-deep water
- Operating water depth up to 3,000 m (10,000 ft) and beyond
- Mobility to transit between global offshore basins without towage
- Large storage capacity for drill pipe, casing, and mud materials
- Integrated crew accommodation, helipad, and rig support systems
- Ultra-deep water oil and gas exploration drilling
- Frontier basin exploration with no fixed infrastructure
- Deep-water appraisal and development drilling campaigns
- Global offshore operations requiring high mobility
