Description
The barge drilling platform is one of the simplest offshore drilling units. It is designed for calm, shallow waters with depths of up to about 20 feet (approximately 6 meters). The barge floats to the drilling location and then settles to the seabed before drilling begins, providing a stable working base.
Barge rigs are commonly used in the Gulf of Mexico, coastal swamps, rivers, and inland waterways where sea conditions are mild. While they cannot handle rough seas or deep-water operations, they provide a cost-effective solution for shallow-water drilling projects. Their simple structure and low mobilization cost make them ideal for short-term exploration campaigns in coastal areas.
- Simple flat-bottom barge design for calm shallow waters
- Settles to the seabed for a stable drilling base during operations
- Low construction and mobilization cost compared to other offshore rigs
- Towing to location by tugboat; no self-propulsion required
- Suitable for water depths up to approximately 6 meters (20 ft)
- Compact drilling package with derrick, mud system, and crew quarters
- Shallow coastal water oil and gas exploration
- Swamp, marsh, and inland waterway drilling operations
- River crossing and nearshore pipeline support drilling
- Geotechnical and environmental exploration in shallow waters
