HDD Rig Buying Guide for Trenchless Projects
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is the preferred method for installing underground pipes, cables, and utilities without excavating roads. Browse our trenchless HDD rig range.
1. HDD Rig Classes
| Rig Class | Thrust/Pullback | Pipe Diameter | Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small / Compact | 10–30 kN | up to 110 mm | Fiber optics, small crossings |
| Mid-Size | 30–80 kN | up to 315 mm | Water/gas lines, medium crossings |
| Large | 80–200 kN | up to 600 mm | Main lines, river crossings |
| Maxi-Rig | 200+ kN | 600 mm+ | Large pipelines, long crossings |
2. Key Specifications to Compare
Thrust and pullback force is the most important spec. Rotary torque matters for rock drilling. Rod capacity determines max bore length. Mud pump performance is critical for sandy ground.
3. Ground Conditions
- Soft soil/clay: most rigs handle this easily
- Sand and gravel: needs good mud performance
- Soft rock: needs higher torque and mud motor
- Hard rock: may require specialized rock tools

4. Total Cost of Ownership
Factor in fuel consumption, maintenance intervals, wear parts (drill rods, bits, reamers), parts availability, and resale value beyond the purchase price.
